Description
A Benedictine priory, dedicated to St Andrew, in the parish of Tywardreath. The priory was founded c.1088 as an alien priory dependent on the monastery of St Serge at Angers, and it was for a time one of the most notable monastic foundations in the county. It gained its independence c.1400, and was suppressed in 1536. Ruins of the priory were still visible c.1822, although, according to Nikolaus Pevsner, by 1951 nothing remained. The bulk of the remains are thought to be in Abbey Orchard. The priory had a grange at St Anthony in Meneage.
